Sports and Recreation

We love sports and vintage sports memorabilia. It brings to mind the sports pioneers who took the risks and took the falls, and helped improve safety and technology so that we could find the excitement that we do in our sports today.

Check out these fairly new sports collectibles (items not available for sale). First is an early oak skateboard with metal wheels with the great brand name of Fifteen Toes.

Second is an original Snurfer brand snowboard. You hang onto the rope and put your regular shoes on the stomp pads. Can you imagine what this beast would have been like to ride?

Here are some items available on line, at shows, or by appointment. Please remember that most sports equipment was used in its day, and will show evidence of normal use wear. Some of these items will be too long or too heavy and bulky to ship economically.

Antique Ice Skates - Items # RE309, RE302 and RE247 - priced individually below

skates skates skates

Item RE #309, priced at $75. Here is a pair of old Victorian ice skates. They are right and left, size 11 1/2. They are skeleton skates, the clamp-on type without bindings. Although there is surface rust on the skates, the mechanism to clamp them is working on both skates. The skates are each marked with the size, right and left, patented 1888, and The Forbes Mnf. Co, Halifax, NS, Canada, Athletic No. 5N. We understand that this company was absorbed into the CCM company.

Item RE #302, priced at $50. Here is another pair of old Victorian ice skates from the same home as the first pair. They are also right and left, size 11 1/2, clamp-on type without bindings, with surface rust. The mechanism to clamp them is working on both skates. The skates are each marked with the size, right and left, No. 7 and US patent applied for 1881. The skates could be either US or Canadian made. With a little clean-up, they would be very decorative in an old sports collection.

Item RE #247, priced at $75. These vintage skates are Dutch, and we understand from a Dutch customer that they are not made any more. They have decorative wood bases with turned-up toes, steel blades and leather toe and ankle straps (one ankle strap has been replaced with a newer one). These skates came with shoe laces wrapped around the skates as you see.

On the front surface where ball makes contact with bat, it is marked at the upper edge on the wood, Gunn & Moore Makers Nottingham England Treble Sprung (in two places). Also Hand Made and ---- Driver (first word illegible). The back surface still retains the paper Gunn & Moore label and is marked Treble Sprung once again.

The lower edge of the bat is covered with some type of cloth. This is marked Lillywhites Piccadilly Circus and again the Gunn & Moore makers.

The six stumps are in good usable condition. The bat has been very well used and is probably at the end of its useful life. The set displays well and would be a great vintage collectible for your home or club.

The rod is in three sections which screw together to make a rod which would be about 110" long. The brass fitting on the handle is marked Milward Made in England. The rod comes with its original cloth bag.

It conjures up images of a perfect summer day in a sparkling stream, with fish to fry for dinner.

Vintage Lobster Trap Floats - Priced individually - see below

lobster lobster

We have a small selection of colorful wood lobster trap floats on hand, priced at $ 35 each. These came from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, where the fishermen used to mark the position of their lobster traps with wooden floats painted in a color and design unique to each fisherman. Nowadays, most lobster trap markers are plastic.

The second photo is the only trap float identified with an actual name. Some of the original white paint remains. This is Item # RE251 priced at $ 45.

These floats make ideal cottage or camp decorations. There is also a tradition on the East Coast of Canada of carving them into whimsical folk art Santa Claus figures.
